The styling detail that will update your dress range…

Every so often a styling detail will emerge that is just everywhere! If you are designing and developing dresses, stop your pattern cutter right now and add some TIERS.

Anyone that has been around long enough to remember the gypsy tiered skirt, boho, Sienna Miller craziness of the mid 00’s than you know just how commercial a tier can be! However, be aware this is not currently a skirt trend. It seems to be confined to dresses for now, but we will be monitoring if the leap to skirts will be made.

We have seen this trend explode on the recent catwalks and pre-shows. The great thing about this trend is that it can relate to whichever season you are currently working on. Its obviously very well suited to summer timing but we have seen an array of winter style dresses using tiered styling and looking fresh and new.

Summer 2020 Styling

For summer product, work into surface textured organza's and sheer fabrications. Tiers also adds a new take on simple summer dresses in cottons and spun viscose as well as being able to be 'added on' to other dress trends such as belted styles. Experiment with length; from flirty super short mini dresses to a new commercial maxi dress. This trend works fantastically on prints but ensure you are using the seasons most up to date print direction.

Autumn Winter 2020 Styling

For Autumn Winter timing, ensure your colour palette is appropriate (look at the Trans/Autumn 2020 colour palette on the site for more help). Satin, velvet and heavier weight twill cottons will work well and remember to include some surface textured fabrics in your range. The sheer crinkle fabrics at Fendi look amazing as show stopper pieces. Tweak shapes to incorporate longer sleeves (all the below are fantastic inspiration starting points) and work into those midi lengths that are always to popular in AW.

This is a trend that we don't see going away anytime soon.

Another element that makes this feature so commercial is that it can be used on so many key dress shapes making it a great way to update a shirt dress or smock dress. Even a wrap dress, feels that bit fresher for the season with a simple tier added. Long, short, print, cotton, woven, jersey, broiderie… the ways to interpret this trend is endless and we will be giving further guidance in upcoming packs.

So make sure you include this detail in your range and let’s hope it gives the gypsy skirt mid 00’s trend a run for its money!
